Why we built GFAB: judgment, not knowledge

The GFAB team ·

Every financial adviser has qualifications that show what they know. Very few have anything that shows how they decide.

Yet that is where clients feel the difference. A client rarely arrives with a clean question that has one textbook answer. They arrive with several worries at once, some of the facts missing, and feelings that pull against the numbers. What they need in that moment is not a rule recited back to them. They need someone who can see what matters most, decide what to do first, and stay steady when the conversation gets hard.

We built GFAB, the Global Financial Adviser Benchmark, to look at exactly that.

Knowledge is necessary. It is not the whole job.

Exams test whether you can recall a rule or apply a method, and they matter: an adviser who does not know the rules is a risk to their clients. But two advisers with the same qualifications can give the same client very different advice. The difference is judgment: what you notice, what you put first, what you are willing to give up to protect something more important, and whether you speak up when it would be easier not to.

Judgment is hard to see from the outside. It does not show on a CV, and clients often only discover it when something goes wrong.

What GFAB looks at

GFAB 2026 presents 81 situations drawn from real client life. In most of them, more than one answer is defensible. You choose what you would actually do, and GFAB looks at the pattern of your choices across eight areas of professional judgment, from what you deal with first to how you handle a difficult conversation.

Nine of the 81 questions also ask how sure you are, because knowing when your confidence has been earned is part of good judgment too.

What GFAB is not

  • It is not an exam or a qualification. There is nothing to study, no syllabus and no pass mark, and GFAB does not certify anyone.
  • It is not a course. GFAB gives no feedback during the assessment. It is a look at how you decide, not a lesson.
  • It is not a ranking. There are no league tables and no public scores. Your report is private to you.
  • It is not a verdict on who you are. The report describes the choices you made in this edition, in plain "you tend to" language.

Why once a year

Judgment changes slowly, through experience, reflection and the occasional hard lesson. A yearly edition gives you a fresh look at your own choices, and the time in between to act on what you learn.

What you get back

After you submit, you receive a private report written for you: your two clearest strengths and what they mean for your clients, one area worth your attention next with practical things to try in real client work, a profile across all eight areas, and a separate view of how well your confidence matched your choices. You can see a sample report for a fictional adviser before you decide.

The founding edition

GFAB 2026 is the founding edition. Your responses are compared with reference answers approved by GFAB for this edition. Independent validation is planned for the next annual edition, and comparisons with other advisers will appear only when there is enough evidence to support them.

Taking part is free and takes about two hours. Once you start, you have 48 hours to finish, and your answers are saved as you go.
